Good to know

Fall is when this house earns its keep. The evenings turn cool, the gas fire pit comes on, somebody pulls the blankets off the Adirondack chairs, and the whole group ends up in the backyard under the string lights. Then everyone walks a block back to campus in the morning. Built in the mid-1920s and fully renovated, Blue Gables sits one block from Walla Walla University. Family Weekend, homecoming, move-in, a recital or a game, Thanksgiving with everyone under one roof — this is a house built for the trip where the whole family comes. WHY FAMILIES BOOK THIS ONE - One block to campus. Walk to programs, performances and ceremonies instead of circling for parking. - A main-floor king suite with a private bath. Grandparents and anyone avoiding stairs get the best room in the house. - Three kings plus a three-bed twin loft. Nobody sleeps on a pullout, and the kids get their own floor. - A kitchen that can actually cook a holiday dinner, and a dining table that seats eight. - A fenced backyard with a gas fire pit for the cool evenings. - Heat throughout, so November and Thanksgiving stays are as comfortable as September ones. - Pets are welcome, and the fence makes it easy. LIVING ROOM - Original 1920s fireplace with tile surround, craftsman mantle and built-in shelving on both sides. It is an architectural feature, not a working fireplace. - Wide plank floors and a large woven area rug - Brass globe chandelier overhead - Leather sofa and accent chairs with room for the whole group - Roku smart TV for the nights you stay in - Front-facing windows and good natural light KITCHEN The kitchen is where this house shows its investment. It is stocked for real cooking, not reheating — which matters in November when the group is making dinner together. - White shaker cabinets floor to ceiling with new countertops - Stainless full-size refrigerator, dishwasher, electric range and over-the-range microwave - Coffee grinder, electric kettle and Keurig ready for morning - Rice cooker, cookie sheets and muffin tins for longer stays - Full set of knives and utensils - Pantry basics: oil, salt, pepper, spices, cream, sugar - Zip-top bags and foil provided - Kitchen door opens directly to the backyard DINING ROOM - Oval dining table seating eight, under a brass chandelier - Scalloped jute rug grounding the space - Direct sight line into the kitchen, so the cook stays in the conversation - Six-seat patio dining set outside for the warmer afternoons BEDROOMS Three kings and a twin loft means the group has real options. Bedroom 1 — Downstairs King Suite - King bed on the main floor, away from upstairs traffic - Private en-suite bath with walk-in shower and built-in seat - New vanity and gold arched mirror - The right room for grandparents, for anyone avoiding stairs, or for the couple who wants a little separation Bedroom 2 — Upstairs King - King bed under a slanted craftsman ceiling - Hardwood floors, woven rug, window blinds - Quiet and removed from the main floor Bedroom 3 — Upstairs King - Second king upstairs, same design and finish as Bedroom 2 - White bed frame, paired nightstands with globe lamps - Windows on the quieter side of the house Bedroom 4 — The Twin Loft - Three twin beds under a characterful slanted ceiling - Boldly patterned woven rug and multiple windows - Games and books provided - Kids claim it immediately. Groups use it as flexible overflow. Phone chargers at every bed. BATHROOMS All three bathrooms were renovated with the same hand. Nothing mismatched, nothing left over from the previous decade. - White shaker vanities and gold fixtures in all three - Gold-framed arched mirrors throughout - Downstairs en-suite: walk-in shower with built-in seat - Second downstairs bath: walk-in shower with bench - Upstairs bath: shower and tub combo - All three fully stocked for your arrival BACKYARD — THE BEST ROOM IN THE HOUSE IN FALL - Gas fire pit with seating around it, and blankets provided - Overhead string lights already strung for early sunsets - Fully fenced, with privacy from the street - Open lawn with cornhole and lawn games - Six-seat patio dining set under an umbrella - Opens straight off the kitchen door - The fence makes it easy for pets and for parents of little kids LAUNDRY - Full-size washer and dryer upstairs - Convenient to all three upstairs bedrooms - Detergent provided LOCATION Blue Gables puts you where you actually need to be for a Walla Walla University trip: on campus without a hotel, and close enough to everything else that you are not spending the visit in the car. ON CAMPUS - 1 block to WWU campus - 2 blocks to the WWU Church - 3 blocks to the Atlas coffee shop - Walk to Family Weekend events, homecoming, performances, ceremonies and campus tours ON FOOT FROM THE FRONT DOOR - Roger's Bakery, half a mile north on College Ave. Maple bars, apple fritters and fresh donuts made daily. A half-mile walk that earns itself every morning. - Andy's Market, half a mile south on College Ave. Full grocery and deli — everything for a family dinner or a Thanksgiving run without the big-box detour.
